3 Ways to Reduce Injury or Death from House Fire

Posted on: November 1, 2018

During a fire, smoke causes diminished vision and lack of oxygen. Consequently, it is the leading cause of injury and death in house fires. The following 3 points could save you and your family in the event of a house fire!

1.Wired Smoke Detector –Most homes come with smoke detectors that are “wired” and have a battery backup. Did you know that wired smoke detectors have a defined life? Most manufacturers state that the “useful life” for wired smoke detectors is 10 years from the installation date!!! If your wired smoke detectors are older than 10 years, they need to be replaced ASAP!

2. In-Duct Smoke Detector – An in-duct smoke detector is installed in the return air ductwork of your heating and cooling (HVAC) system. When it senses smoke, it activates an audible alarm but also SHUTS DOWN your HVAC system. This prevents your system from blowing smoke and poisonous gases throughout the home. In-duct smoke detectors are code in most commercial buildings, but they have not become standard in homes yet. We feel they are a reasonable addition to help keep you and your family safer in the devastating event of a home fire. These devices can be installed in most HVAC systems and tie into the power wiring for their power. They do not require batteries to be replaced annually. They are UL listed and approved by all HVAC manufacturers.

3. Close Bedroom Door – Closing your bedroom door before bed can make a huge difference. Watch this video to learn more!

Please ask your technician about adding an in-duct smoke detector(s) to your heating & cooling system(s).
